Narnia: Chronology vs. Publication Order, Upcoming Netflix Film Series

C.S. Lewis’s classic fantasy series, The Chronicles of Narnia, consists of seven distinct novels published between 1950 and 1956. When exploring or adapting the books, fans and creators generally look at them through two lenses: Publication Order (the order they were written and released) and Chronological Order (the internal historical timeline of the fictional universe).

1. Publication Order

  • The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (1950)
  • Prince Caspian (1951)
  • The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (1952)
  • The Silver Chair (1953)
  • The Horse and His Boy (1954)
  • The Magician’s Nephew (1955)
  • The Last Battle (1956)

2. Chronological Order (Internal Timeline)

  • 1. The Magician’s Nephew: Serving as the grand origin story for the entire franchise, this book explores how the world of Narnia was sung into existence by Aslan, how the Wardrobe wood came to be, and how the White Witch (Jadis) and an evil Uncle first stumbled across the multiverse.
  • 2. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
  • 3. The Horse and His Boy
  • 4. Prince Caspian
  • 5. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
  • 6. The Silver Chair
  • 7. The Last Battle

What We Know About Netflix’s Upcoming Narnia Series / Film

Netflix is tackling the IP with a sweeping cinematic approach spearheaded by filmmaker Greta Gerwig (Barbie, Little Women). Here is what has been revealed regarding the project:

  • The Starting Point: Rather than beginning with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (which most previous film adaptations tackled first), Gerwig’s project officially kicks off with The Magician’s Nephew, serving as the narrative origin point for the universe.
  • The Logo Reveal: Netflix officially debuted the stylized title treatment and logo for Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, giving fans their first official piece of marketing ahead of release.
  • Theatrical & Streaming Release Dates:
    • IMAX Sneak Previews: February 10, 2027
    • Global Theatrical Release: February 12, 2027 (distributed internationally by Sony Pictures). This marks an unusually long, exclusive theatrical window for a Netflix-backed film before it lands on the platform.
    • Netflix Streaming Debut: April 2, 2027
  • Star-Studded Cast: The adaptation features a major ensemble cast, including Emma Mackey as Jadis (The White Witch), Meryl Streep voicing Aslan, Carey Mulligan as Mabel Kirke, alongside other notable actors like Daniel Craig and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith.
  • Future Scope: Greta Gerwig signed on to write and direct at least two films in the Narnia universe for Netflix, opening the door to potentially map out further installments chronologically.
